How much does a 6-foot wood privacy fence cost?

National figures put a 6-foot privacy fence at $25 to $60 per foot installed. The table below gives totals by length for a typical fence at $20 to $60 per foot. A 6-foot privacy fence uses more lumber and heavier posts, so it sits toward the high end of each row.

100 feet$2,000 to $6,000

What is the cheapest fence to have installed?

Chain link, which starts near $9 per foot in the national figures. For privacy, a plain wood fence with dog-ear pickets is normally the lowest-cost solid option. If the goal is keeping a large dog in the yard on a budget, 5 or 6 foot chain link works, and slats can be added later.

Is black aluminum cheaper than wrought iron or vinyl?

Aluminum, at $25 to $75 per foot, is cheaper than wrought iron at $50 to $85 and overlaps vinyl at $30 to $60. It is light, it does not rust, and it keeps a mountain view open, which is why it is popular on the east bench and around pools.

How much extra does a gate cost?

A gate is priced as its own item, not by the foot. Width, material, hardware and whether it has an opener set the price. A walk gate adds the least. A double gate across a driveway or an alley entrance adds more, and a powered gate adds the most. Each gate gets its own line on our estimate.

How much extra for a slope, brush or an old fence?

These three are the usual add-ons in the Salt Lake Valley. Tearing out and hauling an old fence and its concrete takes labor and a dump fee. Overgrown lines along alleys and ditches have to be cleared first. Sloped bench lots and cobble in the soil slow the digging. We price each one after seeing the yard, and list it separately.

I got three quotes and they are far apart. Which one is realistic?

Compare the scope before the totals. Put the quotes side by side and check the footage, the height, the wood species or vinyl grade, post size, post depth, the gates, tear-out, the permit and cleanup. A quote far under the others has usually dropped one of those. When three contractors price the same written scope, the numbers tend to come out close.

Does a fence add value to my home?

A sound, good-looking fence makes a house easier to sell, mainly to buyers with dogs or kids. It seldom returns its whole cost in the sale price. Whether it affects your property taxes is a question for the county assessor's office.
