A kennel or dog run gives a dog a safe place outside when the whole yard is not fenced, or when the yard fence is not enough. We build chain link kennels and runs to size in Salt Lake City back yards, side yards and at boarding and rescue sites. Our weather sets the design. Summer sun at this altitude is strong, and a dark slab or gravel pad gets hot enough to hurt paws, so a kennel needs shade and airflow. In winter it needs a dry spot out of the wind and a gate that still opens after a storm. We leave clearance under the gate for snow and ice and can add a roof panel or shade cover on top of the frame.
Diggers and climbers need extra steps. For a digger we add a bottom rail and bury mesh or set the run on a concrete or paver base. For a climber we use taller panels or a top. Heavier gauge mesh costs a little more and is worth it for large breeds. If the run backs onto a neighbor's fence, we set our own posts so nothing is hung on a fence that is not yours.

What is the best floor for a kennel here?
Concrete or pavers are easiest to clean and stop digging, but they need shade in summer. Pea gravel drains well and stays cooler.

It can stand against the house or a fence you own. We set separate posts so the kennel carries its own load.
