Tennis Court Fencing in Salt Lake City, UT

Court fencing is tall chain link, usually 10 feet, built to stop balls and stand up to wind. In the Salt Lake Valley the wind is the design problem. A windscreen turns an open mesh fence into a solid wall, and courts on the benches near the canyon mouths get strong gusts. We size the posts, footings and bracing for the fence with screens on, and we recommend screens that can be taken down for winter.

Pickleball has changed the work. Many of the calls we get now are to divide an existing tennis court into pickleball courts with low divider fence, or to enclose new courts in a backyard or an HOA common area. Tall enclosures are above the normal residential fence height, so the city or the HOA has to approve them before anything is ordered. We check that first.

Snow and sun both wear on a court fence. Vinyl-coated mesh and powder-coated framework hold their color under high-altitude sun far better than bare galvanized, and they look better against a house. Gates should be wide enough for a snow blower and court equipment. If the court surface is being redone, schedule the fence posts before the final surface goes down.

Tennis court fencing in Salt Lake City: common questions

Do I need approval for a 10 foot court fence at home?

Almost certainly. It is taller than the normal backyard limit, so the city has to approve it and a building permit applies. HOAs often have their own rule for sport courts. We check both.

Should windscreens stay up all year?

We suggest taking them down for winter. Screens catch wind and hold wet snow, and that load is what bends court fence posts.

Can you add pickleball dividers to an existing court?

Yes. Low chain link dividers with gates can be set on the existing slab or in new footings beside it, depending on the surface.
