Frequently asked questions

How much does a fence cost in Salt Lake City?

Most installed fences cost $20 to $60 per foot in 2026 by national published figures. Your price depends on length, height, gates and the ground. See our fence cost guide for ranges by material.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Salt Lake City?

Yes. The city's zoning code calls for a building permit before a fence is built. Front yard fences are limited to 4 feet. Local historic districts need Planning approval first. We check the rule for your address.

How long does a fence installation take?

Usually 2 to 3 working days over about a week, so the concrete can set. Allow extra time for the permit, the Blue Stakes notice and scheduling.

Who calls Blue Stakes before digging?

Whoever digs. When we install the fence, we make the request to Blue Stakes of Utah 811, at least 48 business hours before digging.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Repair when the damage is in one area and the posts are firm. Replace when the repair comes near half the cost of a new fence or most posts are soft at the ground.

Who pays for a fence between neighbors?

In a Utah neighborhood it is by agreement. The state's cost-sharing fence statute (Utah Code 4-26-103) covers grazing land, not ordinary house lots.

How much does a new fence cost in Salt Lake City?

It depends on the material, the length and height, the number of gates and whether an old fence has to come out. We measure on site and give you a written quote with the options side by side.

Which fence material lasts longest?

Vinyl and aluminum need the least upkeep. Cedar looks great and lasts many years when it is sealed. Chain link is the most affordable. We explain the trade-offs for your yard.

Do you repair fences or only install new ones?

Both. We fix leaning posts, storm damage, broken panels and sagging gates, and we tell you honestly when a repair makes more sense than a replacement.
