Most fence repairs cost $300 to $900 in 2026 by national published figures. A small job such as one board, a latch or a gate adjustment is $100 to $300. A big one, with several posts or a section on the ground, is $900 to $2,500.
These price ranges are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Labor, material prices and the conditions on your lot in the Salt Lake Valley move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.
| Repair | Typical cost | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Minor | $100 to $300 | A board or two, loose hardware, a gate adjustment |
| Standard | $300 to $900 | One panel, one or two posts, gate hinges |
| Major | $900 to $2,500 | Several posts, a fallen section, structural damage |
How much does it cost to fix a leaning fence?
The price follows the number of bad posts, because a lean almost always starts at a post. One or two posts is a standard repair. When most of the posts in a run have gone, rebuilding that run costs less than replacing posts one at a time over several visits.
Why is my fence leaning, and can it be fixed without replacing it?
Around Salt Lake City we see four causes again and again. Sprinklers keep the base of a wood post wet all summer and it rots at the soil line. Posts set shallower than the frost depth lift in winter. Canyon winds push on solid privacy panels. And on the benches, soil slowly creeps downhill. If the rails and pickets are still sound, we replace the failed posts and keep the rest.
How much does it cost to replace a rotted fence post?
One or two posts falls in the $300 to $900 national range. We dig out the old post and its concrete, set a new one below frost depth and re-attach the rails. A post that sits in cobble, against a tree root or beside a sprinkler line takes longer.
My gate sags and will not latch. Repair or replace?
Repair it in most cases. A gate sags because the hinge post has moved, the hinges are worn or the frame has gone out of square. We straighten or reset the post, add a diagonal brace or a steel frame kit and move the latch. If the gate's own frame is rotted or cracked, a new gate is the honest answer.
How much does a contractor charge to fix a broken gate latch?
That is a minor repair, $100 to $300 in the national 2026 figures. Most fence companies have a minimum for sending someone out, so save up other small jobs, such as loose pickets, for the same trip.
My fence posts lifted over the winter and the gate will not close. Can they be reset?
Yes, but not by pounding them back down. That is frost heave: frozen soil grips a shallow footing and lifts it. The lasting fix is to pull the post and concrete and set a new footing below the frost line. Salt Lake City's own design criteria list the frost depth as 30 inches, so we dig deeper than that.
My fence line goes wavy every winter. Is it the soil or a bad installation?
Both play a part. Heavy, wet soil, common on the west side of the valley and near the Jordan River, holds water and heaves more than the gravel on the benches. But a deep footing with straight sides stays put even in that soil. If the line moves every year, the posts are too shallow or the concrete is shaped like a mushroom that frost can grab.
A branch bent my aluminum fence. Do I need a whole new panel?
Sometimes only a rail or a few pickets. It depends on how the fence is made. Some systems come apart so that single pieces can be swapped. Others are welded panels and the whole section between two posts is changed. Send a photo that shows the damage and the brackets and we can tell you.
