Guard rail keeps vehicles where they belong: out of a building wall, away from a drop, off a walkway. Around Salt Lake City we install steel rail and bollards in parking lots, at loading docks, along private drives and at the edge of retaining walls on sloped sites. On the benches, where parking areas are often cut into a hillside, the rail at the downhill edge is a safety item, not decoration.
Snow removal is what damages most guard rail here. Plow blades catch post bases and rail ends that are hidden under a storm's worth of snow. We set posts in concrete below frost so a glancing hit does not tip them, and we can add tall markers so plow drivers see the ends. Galvanized steel is the standard finish because winter salt will find any bare spot.
Before we quote we look at what the rail has to stop and how fast it is moving. A rail that guides cars in a parking stall is a different product from one that protects a gas meter or a pedestrian door from a delivery truck. We also call Blue Stakes of Utah 811 before digging, since parking lots usually have lighting conduit and drain lines under the surface.
Guard rails in Salt Lake City: common questions
Is guard rail the same as highway barrier?
The steel shape is similar, but parking lot and site rail is chosen for low-speed impacts. Tell us what is being protected and we recommend the right rail or bollard.
Can posts be set in existing asphalt?
Yes. We core through the asphalt, dig below frost depth, set the post in concrete and patch around it.
Will road salt ruin it?
Galvanized rail holds up well to salt. Painted steel needs touch-up wherever the coating is chipped.
